The Challenge

Our client in the booming ammonia transportation sector faced issues with outdated systems: oversized, inefficient heat exchangers poorly suited for ammonia's low boiling point of -33°C. They required a compact, high-pressure solution (up to 350Bar) compliant with marine standards, without sacrificing vessel efficiency on extended voyages.

Our Innovative Solution

Building on our proven portfolio in FSRU, FLNG, and FGSS technologies, we delivered the AFSS-Ammonia Heat Exchanger—a specialized NH3 Heat Exchanger adapted for marine use. Configured as 8x 210K BC units, it incorporates cryogenic capabilities down to -196°C, drawing from our expertise in Ammonia Vaporizer and low-temp exchange principles. This powerhouse achieves 30% space savings and over 10MW capacity, while enabling seamless gas vaporization, liquefaction, and HP/LP fuel heating. Lloyd's Register certified (Class: LR), it integrates perfectly into BOCIMAR-class carriers.

Unlike traditional Ammonia Refrigeration Heat Exchanger designs focused on industrial cooling, our marine-optimized version prioritizes compactness, high pressure, and reliability for offshore & marine environments—ensuring safe, efficient ammonia handling as both cargo and potential fuel.
